Mohammed Shami bagged the most number of wickets in the 16th season of IPL and won the purple cap.
Purple Cap is the biggest achievement of any bowler in the IPL just like the Orange Cap for any batter. This was one of a kind thing that was introduced since the beginning of the IPL from 2008. Sohail Tanvir was the first bowler to have ever won the purple cap. Player who wore purple cap is often noticed from a vary distance and this is why every batsman respects that player too.

It is biggest honour given to bowlers for their spectacular performance. A bowler can turn around the whole match with a flick of fingers. In the last season, we see some of the finest bowling performances of all time. Mohammed Shami showcase his talent and got himself in the World Cup ODI team.
Rules for IPL Purple Cup
- Purple cap is given to the highest wicket taker in the IPL league.
- Player with the highest number of wickets is allowed to wear it between the matches.
- If there are 2 OR more bowlers with same number of wickets then it is awarded on the basis of economy rate.
- Super overs are not considered valid under Purple Cap rules.

Jasprit Bumrah is currently leading the race of purple cap with 13 wickets and an economy of 6.37. Yuzvendra Chahal is leading next to Bumrah with same number of wickets and a slightly higher economy of 8.83.

Purple Cap Saga
Dwayne Bravo and Harshal Patel is standing on a same pedestal with 32 wickets each in the whole season. Chennai Super Kings consecutively won the purple cap 3 times and 2 times it was won by DJ Bravo. Bhuvneshwaar Kumrar is the only bowler in the list to have won it twice consecutively for the same team SRH.
In the last year edition of IPL, 3 exceptionally skilled bowlers were in the race of purple cap. They all belong to the same team. After Shami, Mohit Sharma and Rashid Khan was chasing Shami in the race of purple cap in 2023 season. This shows the determination of the bowlers also the competitiveness of this cap. After the last world cup, Shami went into rehabilitation to recover from the major injury in his ankle. The injury was so massive that he have to skip T20 World Cup tour 2024.
